When a pet undergoes general anesthesia, a combination of drugs are given to induce unconsciousness. Both injectable and inhaled drugs may be used. Drugs are combined so that we not only achieve unconsciousness but also control pain. Different drugs are chosen based on the patients’ age, physical and medical condition and the procedure being performed. General anesthesia can last for several minutes to several hours depending on the procedure being performed. General anesthesia requires complex equipment for maintaining anesthesia and monitoring the patients’ condition while under anesthesia.
A Registered Veterinary Techinican remains with our anesthetized patients at all times to continually monitor their condition.
