Restore & Maintain Your Pet's Health
At Queensway West Animal Hospital, we provide a range of surgical procedures to help your pet remain healthy, happy and comfortably mobile, now and into their golden years.
Finding out that your pet needs surgery can be upsetting. Please be assured that we only recommend surgery when we feel it is in the best interest of your cat or dog.
We'll talk you through the details of your pet's condition and why we're recommending surgery. It's important to us that you have all the information you need before making the decision to go ahead with the procedure.
We will treat your dog or cat like our own, giving them the same amount of love and care as they would get at home, both in and out of the operating room.
Surgical Procedures
At Queensway West Animal Hospital, our veterinarians perform elective and emergency surgeries to help treat a wide range diseases and conditions in pets and to repair injuries.
Our Kanata veterinarians often perform or refer the following elective and non-elective surgeries:
-
Dental Surgery
Our veterinarians provide dental surgeries to relieve pain and restore good oral health to dogs and cats. These surgeries can range from tooth extractions to gum disease treatment.
-
Soft Tissue Surgery
Soft tissue surgery covers a range of ear, nose, and throat procedures, as well as mass removals and the treatment of flesh wounds. Almost all surgical procedures not covering the musculoskeletal system may be considered soft tissue surgery.
Soft tissue surgery also includes procedures for hepatic, urogenital, oncological, cardiothoracic, gastrointestinal and skin disorders.
-
Spaying & Neutering
Spaying and neutering are very common surgical procedures performed to sterilize pets, prevent disease, and provide dogs and cats with an extended life expectancy.
-
Mass Removal
Masses can grow on or just under the skin or inside a body cavity. While some masses may be removed for aesthetic purposes, other masses can be serious or even life-threatening.
-
Foreign Body Removal
Sometimes, foreign objects are ingested by your dog or cat and get lodged inside their body. Other times, accidents leave glass or other materials stuck in a paw or other parts of a pet's body.
Whether your pet has eaten an object they shouldn't have or experienced a physical injury, we can perform foreign body surgery to remove lodged items.
-
Wound Repair
Wounds occur when living tissue has been cut, broken, burnt, torn, or otherwise damaged. It is imperative that these wounds be cleaned, disinfected, and appropriately cared for by a qualified veterinarian as soon as possible in order to avoid infection and other complications.
The Surgery Process
Before any surgery, we will complete a thorough pre-surgical assessment. This includes a physical examination of your dog or cat as well as possible blood tests to determine if they face an increased risk of anesthesia-related complications.
During surgery, a dedicated nurse will administer anesthesia so your dog or cat is asleep and feels no pain during the procedure. They also monitor your cat or dog's vital signs throughout the procedure.
Post-operative monitoring and pain management are our priorities following surgery. When your pet is ready to be discharged, your veterinarian will provide you with detailed instructions for at-home care.
Sterilization Protocols
Surgical protocols at our clinic include dedicated surgical suites. Our staff wear sterile attire at all times in the surgical suite, and we carefully clean, sterilize and wrap our surgical instruments and equipment before every surgery.
